About|History
1994
Stax was founded to serve clients who require actionable, data-driven insights based on robust analysis of data. From the outset, we provided a roll-up-the-sleeves approach for companies that wanted to make smart decisions and make them quickly.
Our first office was established in Boston with a small team keen to address the demonstrable needs of corporate clients in a variety of industries. Financial services, technology, telecom, industrials, business services and healthcare were among the first industries we worked in.
1996
Stax started serving private equity clients who welcomed our broad range of analytic skill sets, team flexibility, get-to-it approach, ability to bring insights to the table, and sensible demeanor when dealing with market opportunities and risks. The high frequency of industry and target company deep dive engagements meant that Stax’s industry experience scaled rapidly. Initially, we worked with private equity firms based in Boston and San Francisco. Since then we have been retained by 12 of the top 20 LBO funds globally.
In parallel, our corporate client base across the U.S. expanded, as did the breadth of engagements delivered. With many hundreds of projects under our belt—focused on markets, customers, channels and competitors—our institutional knowledge and industry relationships with management teams became cumulatively substantial.
1998
Stax Chicago was started up to serve Mid-West clients and tap into local talent.
2003
We opened Stax NYC to meet the needs of our corporate and private equity clients in the tri-state area.
2005
Stax Colombo was established to help us better serve client needs in Asia, and to develop data and analytic resources unmatched at traditional strategic consulting firms.
We realized that the data within corporate information systems was massive, growing, and completely underutilized for identifying profit opportunities and operational improvements. Specialist teams were recruited and trained to work with our strategic consulting team, to provide an unmatched combination of strategic framing and data mining. Utilizing these technical and analytical skills, we have delivered actionable answers to help global clients improve incremental profit, reduce working capital and increase ROE.
Stax Today
Today, we have decade-long direct relationships with public and private corporations, as well as with private equity firms, their portfolio operations groups and portfolio companies. Our relationships have been built on providing assistance at key points and creating critical value drivers.
About 25% of Stax’s work comes from international clients in Europe and Asia, and approximately 35% of our engagements have a major international component. Our engagements span the strategic, M&A, finance, operations, marketing, and sales functions—all of these resulting in data driven and actionable answers for clients.
Stax’s management has substantive frontline experience through several market cycles, and a comfort level with the speed of market changes and the urgency with which management needs to adapt. At Stax, we invest in opportunities for consultants to stretch and grow across function. We’re generally competing against a peer set that is decades older and has a heavier partner infrastructure, which can inhibit opportunities for talented up-and-comers who want to personally work on growing client relationships. We believe that providing this unique opportunity set for highly skilled and motivated individuals will contribute substantively to Stax’s future growth.
